Orville Patrick Shannon, a beloved member of the Pelican Rapids community and a dedicated teacher, passed away at his home on September 28, 2023, at the age of 80. Born on May 26, 1943, in Brainerd, Minnesota, the son of his loving parents, Orville and Margaret (Cronin) Shannon. Orville lived a life characterized by passion, service, and kindness.

With a keen intellect and a love for learning, Orville pursued higher education at Moorhead State University, where he earned a Degree in Mathematics Education. Inspired by his own teachers, he embarked on a career as a junior high math teacher, imparting knowledge and shaping young minds for several decades in Fergus Falls.

Orville was an admired member of the education community, known for his dedication, patience, and ability to make math accessible to his students. His impact went beyond the classroom, as he served as a mentor to countless individuals, instilling in them the joy and importance of learning. Orville's passion for education and his commitment to his students will be remembered for generations to come.

Outside of his profession, Orville was an active member of St. Leonard Catholic Church, where he found solace and strength through his faith. He generously dedicated his time as a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as an usher at church services. Orville was involved in various community initiatives, including the Pelican Rapids Food Shelf and the Pass It On Thrift Store. His selflessness and commitment to others were deeply admired and will be greatly missed.

In his leisure time, Orville found joy in the simple pleasures of life. An avid angler, he relished casting his line into the tranquil waters, finding peace and connection with nature. Orville also enjoyed perfecting his swing on the golf course, immersing himself in the challenge and camaraderie of the sport. A lover of books, he could often be found engrossed in a novel, expanding his horizons through the power of words. Orville had an appreciation for football and passionately supported his favorite team, finding excitement and enjoyment in the competitive spirit of the game.

Orville was a loving brother to his sister, Luanne Swenson, and a cherished uncle to his nephew, Eric (Kylee Persing) Swenson and his niece, Shannon (Adam) Wander and their children, Cora and Cooper. He shared many fond memories with his family, and their bond was strengthened by their shared experiences.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice, reflecting Orville's spirit of kindness and generosity.

Memorial Gathering will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 26, 2023, at St. Leonard Catholic Church, Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass to honor and celebrate Orville's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 26, 2023, at St. Leonard Catholic Church with Father Jeff Ethan officiating.

Interment at a later date at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Moorhead, MN.

Orville Patrick Shannon leaves behind a legacy of compassion, intellect, and service to community and family. He will forever be remembered as a remarkable educator, a devoted brother and uncle, and a friend to all. May his soul find eternal peace and his memory inspire us to embrace life with the same zest and kindness that defined his being.
