Marcella Korda, age 102, of Pelican Rapids, MN, died Saturday, August 12, 2023, at her residence with her loving family by her side.
Marcella Gertrude was born in Dubuque, IA on February 22, 1921. She was adopted as an infant by Edward and Anna Schlemma of Spragueville, IA.
She attended country school through eighth grade and spent her high school years at Mt. St. Clare Academy in Clinton, IA. She worked a year until old enough to enter nursing school at Mercy Hospital in Burlington, IA. She earned her R.N. in June 1942. Entered the United States Army Nurse Corp in December 1942. Marcella spent her Army career in the 95th Evacuation Hospital in the European theatre as an operating room nurse and supervisor. She served in Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. Marcy survived a sinking of a hospital ship by the Germans and the bombing of the 95th Evacuation at Anzio, Italy. Marcy’s time in World War II as a nurse with the 95th Evacuation Hospital was depicted in the fictional novel “A Burnished Rose” by Christine Keleny.
On March 14th, 1945, Marcy married Dr. Henry A. Korda in Hoff, France.
The joy of her life was her family. She also enjoyed reading, needle work, quilting for Lutheran World Relief, knitting, and playing bridge. Marcy was also a member of the V.F.W. Post #5252, V.F.W. Auxiliary #5252, Trinity Lutheran Church, circle member, and member of bridge groups.
Marcy is survived by children: Renee Korda, Potomac, MD; Michael John Korda, Seattle, WA; Rachael (Richard) Gabe, Pelican Rapids, MN; Rae Marie Korda, Portland, OR; Roxanne Elaine Korda, Portland, OR; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by parents Edward (Anna) Schlemma, her husband Henry A. Korda, brother Frederick Schlemma, sister-in-law Rita Schlemma.
Visitation: Sunday, August 27, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids, MN. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 28, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Pelican Rapids, Minnesota with Pastor Eric Schwirian and Allen Westby, S.A.M. officiating.
Military Honors: Pelican Rapids V.F.W. Post #5252 and American Legion Post #17
Interment: Ringsaker Cemetery, Pelican Rapids, Minnesota
