Jean Audrey Anderson was born on February 24, 1934 to Peter O. and Thelma (Halbakken) Anderson. Jean passed peacefully on Sunday, October 11, 2026 in Oregon where for 3 years she had made her home with her son Eric and daughter-in-law Jami. She grew up on a dairy farm, attending country school at district 78 through 8th grade. She then became a student at Pelican Rapids High School, boarding in town with other young rural girls at various homes in Pelican Rapids. It was a challenge to get to school in town when living on the farm.
She graduated high school in 1952 and began working at the Pelican Creamery. She married Erling Engebretson and to this union 4 children were born: Teresa, Nancy, Eric, and Kurt. Jean also worked at Severson Drug, Rex’s Grocery, and lastly at Lake Region Co-op for several years, serving as a receptionist/ cashier. Jean enjoyed seeing the public.
In 1984, Jean and Victor Hitter were united in marriage. They made several trips to Oregon to see family, especially their 4 grandchildren. They enjoyed Florida, the Black Hills, and many Northern Minnesota camping adventures, often returning to their favorite campsites.
Jean managed to turn Vic into an honorary Norwegian by enlisting him to assist her in lefse making. Norwegian was spoken often by Jean, and every family meal began with her reciting the “I Jesu navn”, the Norwegian table prayer.
Those who passed before her include: her husband Victor Hitter, her parents Peter and Thelma Anderson, her brother Clifford Anderson, her sister and brother-in-law Evean and Lawrence Holt, and many other ancestors, cousins, and extended family. Surviving Jean are her children Teresa and husband Patrick Schroeder, Sioux Falls, SD, Nancy and husband Jason Stein, Redmond, OR, Eric and wife Jami, Shady Cove, OR, and Kurt and partner Cindy Rosenberg, Prineville, OR; 5 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and family members.
