Lloyd B. Hovland, age 87, a resident of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, died on Saturday, November 29, 2008, at Merit Care Palliative Care Center in Fargo, North Dakota.Lloyd Benneth Hovland was born January 4, 1921, in Larson, North Dakota, the son of Ole and Karen (Ohe) Hovland, the youngest of 11 children.He was baptized and confirmed in Larson, ND.He lived in North Dakota until entering the U.S. Navy in 1944.Serving in the South Pacific for two years aboard the U.S.S. Tryon Hospital Ship, seeing several large battles around the Islands of Pelaloo.On October 22, 1948, Lloyd was united in marriage with Ardis Weik in Rothsay, Minnesota.Lloyd lived and worked in the Pelican Rapids area for 50 years, including the Farmers Feed Mill before working for Great Plains Natural Gas Company for 20 years.Lloyd loved gardening, lawn work, the Minnesota Twins and making the annual supply of rossettes for many.He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his many friends and relatives.Annually he enjoyed attending Hstfest in Minot, North Dakota.Lloyd and Ardis were fortunate to have traveled to Alaska and Norway, and in 2007, they attended the World War II Memorial dedication in Washington, D.C.Most recently, this past October, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.Lloyd was a charter member of the Pelican Rapids V.F.W. Post #5252 for over 50 years and served as commander for a period of years.He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Erhard.Lloyd is survived by his wife, Ardis; three sons:Larry (Cheryl) Hovland, Pelican Rapids, MN, Lonny (Lisa) Hovland, Detroit Lakes, MN, and Lyman Hovland, Audubon, MN; one daughter, Lynette (Dave) Hovland, Erhard, MN; two grandchildren:Paula (Nick) Disse, Detroit Lakes, MN and Darren Hovland, Portland, Oregon; four great-grandchildren: Carson, Emma, Alea and Griffin Disse; two sisters: Eleanor (Pat) Hammer, Minot, ND, and Lida Mogren, Seattle, WA; and several nieces and nephews.Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters: Hilma, Ida, Cora and Alice; four brothers: Norbert, Clifford, Morris and Lloyd M.
