Herbert Grunewald, age 89, a resident of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.Herbert Freddie Grunewald was born April 14, 1920, in Rothsay, Minnesota, the son of William and Magda (Hoel) Grunewald.Herbert was baptized and confirmed at Friborg Lutheran Church.He grew up and attended schools in the Rothsay area.He worked on the family farm until he was inducted into service in January 1942.He was an army engineer stationed in Alaska working on the Alaskan Highway and in the Southwest Pacific.He was discharged in December 1945, and was employed at Lindberg Motor Company in Rothsay. Herb married Arlyne Toso on Novemeber 9, 1947, at South Immanuel Church and lived in the Rothsay and Fergus Falls area.They later moved to Sabin and Moorhead where Herb worked for the Moorhead School District for 22 years.He retired in 1985 and lived in Pelican Rapids and Pittsburg, Texas.Herb and Arlyne had celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary last November.Herb enjoyed being a carpenter, traveling, camping, fishing, dancing and took special enjoyment in his grandchildren.His favorite places to travel were Medora, Branson, Missouri and Northshore Drive.Herb is survived by his son, Jeffrey (Barb) Grunewald, Pelican Rapids, MN; daughter, Jacalyn (Steven) Larson, Flower Mound, TX; one grandson, Shane Grunewald, Eden Prairie, MN; two granddaughters:Tiffany Grunewald, Chicago, IL, and Kendall Larson, Flower Mound, TX; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlyne in April 2009; his parents, William and Magda; one sister, Burdell Tollerude; four brothers:Carl, Art, Ernest and Clarence.Memorials are preferred to:Emmanuel Nursing Home, 1415 Madison Avenue, Detroit Lakes, or Trinity Lutheran Church, 315 E.
