Truman Edward Strand was born November 22, 1920 in Glenwood, MN to Thosten and Blanche (Barsness) Strand. He grew up on Lake Minnewaska and attended country school near Glenwood. Truman graduated from Glenwood High school in 1938. In September 1942 he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in New Jersey with the Army's 325th Fighter Squadron maintaining armaments on the P-47 fighters.After his discharge, he returned to Glenwood working in the hardware store where he met Phyllis Lane, a teacher from Hunter, ND. On August 17, 1947 they married in Glenwood and moved to Centerville, SD where he purchased the Coast to Coast hardware store. In 1953 they purchased the Coast to Coast store in Pelican Rapids which Truman operated until his retirement. Phyllis passed away May 24, 2002 at Pelican Valley Nursing Home in Pelican Rapids.Truman loved Pelican Rapids and was an active member of the Rotary Club. He worked hard at developing the suspension bridge, city parks, Maplewood State Park and many other city projects.Truman served as mayor of Pelican Rapids, was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church with his priorities being God, family and friends. Truman enjoyed his cabin on Lake Lida, especially when family and friends could join him. Winters were spent in Apache Junction, AZ with hiking the mountains being one of his favorite passions.In 2003 Truman married JoAnne Lucius and they enjoyed many years of travel until his ill health.Truman Edward Strand, 92, formerly of Pelican Rapids, died October 22, 2013 at Grand Arbor Senior care center in Alexandria MN.Truman is survived by his wife JoAnne, Alexandria, MN; children: Steve (Chelsea) of Pelican Rapids, MN, David (Cindi) of Pelican Rapids, MN, Paul (Carol) of Rocklin, CA, son-in-law Daryl Weiss of East Grand Forks, MN; 11 grandchildren: Sara (Steve) Sheffield, Jessica (Travis) Mougeotte, Julie Strand, Matt Strand, Nate Strand, Mari Weiss, Peter Weiss, Andrew Weiss, Robert Strand, Michael Strand and Paul David Strand; 3 great-grandchildren: Mckayla Mougeotte, Camryn Mougeotte and Jacob Sheffield; 3 step-children; 6 step-grandchildren and sister-in-law Mary Ann Strand.He is preceeded in death by his wife, Phyllis, his parents Thosten and Blanche, daughter Ginger Weiss, brothers Ralph and Clint, and sister Evelyn.Visitation: Friday, October 25, 2013, from 4:30-7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., at Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids, MN.
