Sophia Amy Odens

February 10, 2010 — February 11, 2014

Sophia Amy Odens was born February 10, 2010 in Fargo, ND and was granted her angel wings on February 11, 2014 following a short-term illness. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Sophia had touched in some small way throughout her short, yet very memorable life. Sophia Amy Odens, daughter of Eric and Karen A. (Welke) Odens, became ill on February 5, 2014 with flu-like symptoms and was taken to the hospital in Detroit Lakes, MN the next day. She was then transferred to Sanford Health in Fargo and admitted into the pediatric intensive care unit. After tests Thursday and Friday, it was determined she had E. Coli, strain 0157:H7, which brings on HUS causing her kidneys to shut down. The evening of February 7, Sophia was airlifted to Sanford Children's Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD to be cared for by a pediatric kidney specialist. She underwent multiple surgeries and dialysis. Sophia lost her battle on February 11, one day after her fourth birthday.Sophia was a very artistic little girl who loved to paint and draw pictures. She enjoyed playing "My Little Ponies" and spending lazy summer days down at the beach with mom. She loved to sing and dance and play dress up especially with her doctor's uniform helping stuffed animals and her dog, Buddy, feel better. She was daddy's little girl who liked when he painted her nails and in return would have a game of floor hockey. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten. She truly was our little angel.Sophia's life would seem too short to many, but those who were touched by her understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. Her gentle smile could melt the hearts of those around her.Sophia is survived by her parents, Eric and Karen Odens, Pelican Rapids; grandparents: Curt and Barbara Odens, Breckenridge, MN, Edward and Vicki Welke, Detroit Lakes, MN and Marilyn and Harvey Gray, Salt Lake City, Utah; two aunts Laura Welke, Dominica and Ann (Jason) Taaffe, Minneapolis; uncle, Kyle (Alicia) Odens, Abercrombie, ND, and Stephen Rehn, Minneapolis, MN; cousins: Aubrey and Isaac Odens and Abriel and Eli Taaffe; and numerous great aunt and uncles.
