Ed Michael Hanyzewski

Ed Hanyzewski, age 73, a resident of Pelican Rapids, MN, died at Pelican Valley Health Center in Pelican Rapids.Edward Michael Hanyzewski was born March 2, 1943 in South Bend, Indiana to Edward and Lucille (Paprocki) Hanyzewski. In 1962 Ed graduated from Saint Joseph's High School in South Bend. After graduation, Ed attended the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, but ultimately attended and graduated from NDSU in Fargo, ND with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. On June 8, 1968 he was united in marriage with Peggy Oase in Fargo, ND. Ed and Peggy owned and operated Riverside Farms in Pelican Rapids from 1969 to May of 1998. For 31 years Ed taught at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton. For 10 years he was also a part-time instructor at 3M and was instrumental in the creation of that company's first Quality Control Manual.Ed wasn't an official member of a local church, but always referred to himself as "a Christian first and a Catholic second". He was a member of the American Legion, active in the MS society, former board member of the YMCA in Fergus Falls and helped friends with projects for the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion in Rollag. He formed a group "Friends Helping Friends" and was also an advocate for cancer survivors and their families. In his spare time he enjoyed building large and small machinery and small engines. He also invented useful items, especially health care devices for people.The family would like to thank the staff of the Broen Home, Pelican Valley Health Center and Lakeland Hospice for their wonderful care of Ed. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to MS Society, Muscular Dystrophy Assoc., Lakeland Hospice, American Diabetes Assoc., or donor's choice.Ed is survived by his brother, Bob (Connie) Hanyzewski, Richville, MN and sister, Janet (Iain) Webber, Minneapolis, MN; brothers-in-law: Greg (Pam) Oase, Bismarck, ND, Harvey (Denise) Oase, Reeder, ND, and Jeff (Sarah) Oase, Reeder, ND; sisters-in-law: Patricia (Curtis) Tews, Reeder, ND and Pam (Tony) Scheerz, Rapid City, SD; uncle in-law Quentin Oase: aunt Lorraine Leszcz, South Bend, IN: and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Peggy.Visitation: Tuesday, May 17 from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. - at Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids with a Prayer Service at 6:00 p.m. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
